WhatsApp Status and Instagram measure different kinds of audience
South African Instagram ad-audience estimates and WhatsApp usage estimates describe different populations and should not be compared as predicted post visibility.

Instagram is a familiar marketing channel for many South African businesses, but the sources below do not measure which service business owners prefer.
Available figures provide context about the services, but they do not measure the same thing or predict an individual business's audience.
Two figures worth knowing
DataReportal's Digital 2026 report for South Africa puts Instagram's advertising reach here at 8.60 million users in late 2025 — about 13.2 percent of the population. Facebook, by comparison, reaches 27.9 million.
The cited research reports that around 94 percent of South African internet users use WhatsApp, with Yazi's analysis putting it at 93.9 percent and roughly 28 to 29 million people at the end of 2025.
This is not a like-for-like comparison: one figure is an advertising-audience estimate and the other is a survey-based usage estimate. They provide separate context about each service and do not predict how many people will see your Status or an Instagram post.
Use each figure for what it measures; neither is a forecast for a particular business, post or customer list.
The caveat, because these numbers get abused
The Instagram and Facebook figures are advertising-reach numbers from the platforms' own ad planning tools, and DataReportal is explicit that they may not represent unique individuals and that changes in ad reach do not necessarily track changes in real usage. The WhatsApp figure is a different kind of number: a survey-based share of internet users, converted to a headcount.
They are not directly comparable, and presenting them as one clean scoreboard would be misleading. Treat them as separate estimates with different definitions, not a channel recommendation or outcome forecast.
When WhatsApp Status may be worth testing
WhatsApp Status supports images or short videos that expire after twenty-four hours. Who can view a Status depends on privacy settings and whether contacts have saved each other's numbers.
That contact-based context may make Status useful for some businesses, but a saved contact is not proof that someone will open or act on an update.
Visibility and reach are not guaranteed. Check your audience settings, respect the context in which people shared their number, and judge the channel from your own observed responses rather than a platform-wide promise.
How to actually use it without being annoying
- Choose a frequency as an experiment, then adjust it from direct feedback and observed responses rather than a fixed weekly rule.
- Reuse an approved asset only when it suits the Status format, audience settings and consent context; posting still takes review and manual effort.
- Test a mix of useful information and offers without assuming a fixed promotional ratio will suit every contact list.
- Say what to do next plainly, such as replying or calling. A direct chat may be convenient, but it does not guarantee an enquiry or sale.
- Keep a business number separate from your personal one if you can. It makes posting feel like work rather than exposure.
The part that suits how Soruno works
Soruno uses your brand inputs to generate draft captions and images. You must review each draft, check consent and audience settings, download only what you approve, and manually post it to your own accounts; results and time saved vary and are not guaranteed.
Not instead of. As well as
None of this establishes that one service should replace the other. Each can serve different communication contexts, and neither guarantees discovery.
If both services fit your customers and consent practices, test both manually and compare the responses you can actually observe. The national estimates above cannot tell you which channel will work better for your business.

Out of sight, out of mind: a useful content-planning lens
Being familiar may influence some decisions, but visibility alone does not determine what a customer chooses.
Strategy
What a quieter posting rhythm can change
Posting less means creating fewer items that a platform could potentially show, but it does not explain every change in distribution.
